1. Rehoboth Beach – Coastal Charm at Its Finest
At the top of our list is Rehoboth Beach, because no Delaware summer is complete without a trip to this picturesque destination. Known for its welcoming boardwalk, boutique shopping, local restaurants and family-friendly vibe, Rehoboth is about an hour and a half from both Dover and Felton. You can soak in the sun, grab a cone from Kohr Bros., stroll the shops and enjoy live music at the bandstand—all in one afternoon. It’s the perfect weekend escape or even a quick day trip.
For those in Newark, it’s about a two-hour drive, but well worth it for a relaxing beach day or an overnight stay in one of the area’s charming bed and breakfasts.
2. Lewes – History, Nature, and a Slower Pace
Just west of Rehoboth Beach is Lewes, Delaware’s first town and one of the state’s most beautiful coastal communities. Lewes is ideal if you’re looking for a slower, quieter beach experience steeped in history. Explore Cape Henlopen State Park, with its stunning beaches, bike trails and nature center, or visit the Zwaanendael Museum to learn about the area’s Dutch roots.
Lewes is an easy drive from any of our new home communities in Delaware and makes for a lovely day or weekend trip—especially for those who enjoy kayaking, bird watching or simply relaxing by the bay.
3. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge – A Hidden Gem
Located just outside Dover, Bombay Hook is a must-visit for nature lovers. This vast wildlife refuge is home to countless species of birds and other wildlife, and its driving loop and walking trails make it easy to explore. Bring your binoculars and a camera—there’s always something beautiful to see.
It’s a quick trip from our Noble’s Pond community in Dover, and still just under an hour from Felton and Newark, making it a great mid-morning or afternoon outing.
4. Delaware State Parks – Outdoor Fun All Summer Long
Delaware’s state parks offer something for everyone, and with several located near our Wilkinson Homes communities, you’re never far from adventure. Favorites include:
- Lums Pond State Park in Bear (near Newark) – perfect for hiking, kayaking, fishing and even ziplining.
- Killens Pond State Park near Felton – features a water park, paddle boating, nature trails and picnic areas.
- White Clay Creek State Park near Newark – great for hiking, biking and spotting local wildlife.

It’s a great option for residents of our Briarcreek North community in Newark, and not too far for a day trip from Felton or Dover either.
6. Bethany Beach – A Peaceful Coastal Escape
If you’re craving a beach getaway without the hustle and bustle of larger coastal towns, Bethany Beach is the perfect spot. Known for its small-town charm and quiet, family-friendly atmosphere, Bethany offers clean beaches, a quaint boardwalk and delightful local shops and restaurants. It’s an ideal destination for a peaceful day by the ocean or a laid-back weekend with loved ones.
Located just under two hours from our communities in Dover and Felton, Bethany Beach is a great option for a scenic summer drive with a relaxing payoff.
