Keep the Holidays in Mind When You are Designing your New Home

A family enjoying the holidays in their new Wilkinson home.

The time of year has come again where we find ourselves rushing through each day until the upcoming holidays are finally upon us. The days seem shorter yet the amount of items on your to-do list continues to grow, and decorating your home for the holidays may begin to seem like more of a chore than anything else—that shouldn’t be the case. When you have the opportunity to build the home you’ve always wanted you can specifically cater the house to meet your needs when it comes to getting ready for the holiday season. Read on to see a few ideas that Wilkinson Homes has put together to ensure that your home is exactly what you and your family need.

Think through the electrical elements

When designing the main living area in your home, you’ll want to visualize where you intend to place your holiday decor. The tree is easily seen as the focal point when it comes to Christmas decorations, and when you decide on the perfect location for it you’ll then need to ensure you have enough electrical outlets located in that spot. The other item you’ll need to keep in mind is the placement of any HVAC vents. An artificial tree could block any air from coming out, while a live tree could be dried out by the vent and cause a potential fire hazard. If you already know where you’d like your Christmas tree to go, you can avoid any issues and possibly have the air vents placed in other locations around the room.

There are other decorations besides the tree that will also need your attention. Do you plan on covering your staircase banister and your fireplace mantel in garland and lights? Whatever the case, you’ll need electrical outlets near each area you tend to decorate—including the exterior of your home. When in doubt, add in another electrical outlet. It’s better to not use it one year when decorating than to decide the next that you’d like to add an additional tree in the foyer but have no way to easily plug in the lights.

Utilize our top design options

One of the biggest perks of working with a builder that has over three decades of experience is that we have spent those years listening to our homeowners and continuously creating homes that meet their needs. When the time comes for you to host the holiday dinner party, our gourmet kitchen package includes a double oven—just the thing you need to ensure that you have plenty of time and space to create your holiday meal without any additional stress.

When you’re in the kitchen cooking, you never want to feel out of the conversations around you. When choosing a home to pair well with holiday gatherings, an open floor plan is a highly sought after design for this reason as it offers everyone the chance to easily congregate throughout the rooms no matter how many are in attendance.

With many of our floor plans offering incredible open concept designs including the Fairfield, Bristol, Woodcrest and Montgomery and having the option of working with our team of outstanding architects to create your own custom home, your house will easily be ready for the holidays each year.
